In the summer of 2016, Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez watched her husband slip away into a raging river. Tony’s career as a therapist specializing in trauma recovery could not shield her from the trauma surrounding his death, but it did point her toward healing from its aftereffects. As a progressive Lutheran minister ordained in the ELCA, Jennifer never attempts to minimize or “pray away” suffering. Instead, she guides trauma survivors toward healing through a combination of spiritual and clinical care.

Trauma recovery is a complex process requiring the support of skilled professional therapists, but how does faith in a loving God intersect with clinical healing? In search of an answer to this question, Jennifer turns to the Judeo-Christian scriptures that rage at God. Refusing to suppress grief, anger, or doubt, she reaches deeper into these difficult passages in solidarity with all who suffer, finding wisdom and sometimes solace amid the suffering. Honest reflections flow into heartfelt prayers that speak truth to trauma, delivered alongside clinically-developed somatic practices—some of which are guided by imbedded videos.

In the braiding of these three strands—reflection, prayer, and somatic practice—Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez offers a companion to trauma recovery that embraces both faith and therapy. Guiding readers in over 50 research-based practices, Gathering Stars provides living proof that healing is possible.

Praise for Gathering Stars

“Gathering Stars is a companion for anyone still learning how to breathe through what happened to them. Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez treats trauma as the full-body truth it is—and offers something rarer than comfort: honest practice for healing it.”
— Frank Spinelli, MD, author of The Shame Compass: A Radical Framework for Trauma Healing and Self-Acceptance
“Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez writes with the rare authority of someone who has endured devastating trauma and courageously found her way toward healing. As the wife of my late friend and Facing Heartbreak co-author, Tony Rodriguez, who was a respected therapist and leader in the field of trauma and recovery, Jennifer brings to Gathering Stars a deeply personal understanding of grief, faith, and the complex ways trauma lives within the body. With truth and wisdom, she weaves together contemplative reflection, honesty, and trauma-informed somatic practices, offering no easy platitudes but instead a compassionate and grounded companion for those navigating profound loss. Gathering Stars is an invaluable resource and a luminous reminder that even amid tremendous pain, glimmers of hope and healing remain possible.”
— Mari A. Lee, LMFT, author of Healing from Betrayal, and co-author of Facing Heartbreak, and The Mindfulway to Wellness.
“Gathering Stars offers what trauma recovery so often requires: wisdom in small doses, compassion without easy answers, and hope grounded in faith.”
— Lori Erickson, author of Every Step is Home
“This book is a wonderful resource for anyone who has been impacted by trauma. Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez is a trustworthy guide, and she writes with honesty, vulnerability, and wisdom. Grounded in both evidence and scripture, the meditations, prayers, and other practices offer a meaningful pathway to healing and renewal. I am grateful for this book!”
— Kate H. Rademacher, author of Reclaiming Rest: The Promise of Sabbath, Solitude, and Stillness in a Restless World
“Gathering Stars, a guide to healing after trauma, is filled with imaginative compassion and biblically informed insight. The writer has walked the path she maps. One by one she names facets of trauma and offers simple practices rooted both in her experience and in biblical stories that provide a rich, usable record of suffering and healing. The book is a practical handbook as well as a testimony to how both sacred stories and current trauma studies can help us find balance, hope, and wholeness. This is a book to keep nearby, share with those in pain, and learn from. Even those of us who are not in the process of trauma recovery will find the practices she recommends restorative and life-giving.”
